How to Navigate the Grocery Store and Shop Healthier

Next time you are shopping for food with your kids, bring a large piece of paper and have them sketch out a route through your favorite supermarket that will help you steer you clear of the bad stuff. They can mark forbidden aisles and come up with rules you have to follow…
Some ideas to get you started:
- Shop the peripheries of the supermarket and stay out of the middle (Michael Pollan’s food rule #12). Processed food products dominate the center aisles, while produce, meat, fish and dairy (the “real” foods) line the walls.
- Don’t buy processed meals that would take only ten minutes (or less) longer to make from scratch. For example, skip pre-boxed rice mixes. You still o would have to boil the rice anyway, and all you have to do to create your own version is to add your own spices, oils, cheese, etc. Same goes for pasta!
- You can’t have more than three products in your shopping cart that have more than five ingredients.
