The tantalizing sweet smells coming from the ZisBoomBah.com kitchens can only mean one thing: it’s holiday cookie season, and our ovens have been baking nonstop to bring you the best recipes for your family and friends.
This year, we asked the ZBB team for their most treasured family holiday cookie recipes for a bake-off with our talented kid cooks. With supervision by ZisBoomBah founder Karen Laszlo, our four up-and-coming chefs, aged 3, 5, 7 and 9, judged for taste, appearance and kid-friendliness.
Fun with Flour!
Karen asked cooking questions and played scavenger-hunt games for ingredients and equipment to keep her grandkids psyched. “There are always lots of questions on what a teaspoon is versus a tablespoon and what is a cup and how do I measure?” Karen says.
Explaining what it means for butter to be softened and allowing small tastes of brown sugar and chocolate chips really got our young bakers enthusiastic about baking from scratch. Karen was sure to let her chefs know that only the uncooked batters were off-limits because of the raw eggs.
“We loved the gadgets—the old-fashioned eggbeater was the best. The kids loved whipping the eggs with it, screaming ‘faster!’” Karen recalled. “They also liked to know what level to use for the Kitchen Aid. I explained that you had to go slow or the flour would end up on them. Once I just asked what they thought, and the flour went everywhere—it was so funny!”
Karen said that “as soon as the cookies came out [of the oven], there were tons of hands reaching for a taste, so we cut one cookie into several pieces…they usually had really good ideas on what might be missing if [the cookie] wasn’t up to par.”
The Winner Is…
After careful judging, the winner was Elly’s Vanillekipferl (Vanilla Crescents), from ZisBoomBah Editor and Writer Sandra Henderson (see Sandra’s articles here). With their “love it” votes and one “OK” vote, the Vanilla Crescents recipe was the definitive kid favorite.
All the holiday cookie recipes from ZisBoomBah’s wonderful staff were so excellent, so we wanted to share them all. See all our heartwarming holiday recipes here.
