Summer, the time for fun games and outdoor activities for kids, is finally here! And with longer days, plenty of sun and your grade-schoolers out of school, you might be wondering how you’re going to get your workouts in …
Never fear. Even if you do all of your workouts with your kids right beside you, you can still get in some very effective movement that satisfies your needs for exercise and your kids’ demand for summer fun.
Following are three ideas for fun games and activities to get you moving while your kids have fun with you!
Fun Games, Fit Mom
Fitness Scavenger Hunt
Hide 4 to 6 small containers with notes inside with a fun activity for both you and your kids respectively. Once the kids find a container with a set of activities for you and them, you get to start your activity while your kids count your reps and do their activities or fun games at the same time. Then, while the kids are searching for the next container, jog around the yard or do some jumping jacks.
Ideas for the adult/kids activities and fun games to put in the jars:
- Adult: 15 push-ups; Kids: they can bear crawl around you on their hands and feet while they count your reps for you. As soon as you are done with the last rep or your push-ups, the kids jump up to race around and find the next jar.
- Adult: 15 walking lunges with each leg; Kids: Jump forward like a frog and say “Ribbit” with each counted lunge you take forward. As soon as you are done with the last forward lunge, the kids jump up to race around and find the next jar.
- Adult: Hold a plank for 60 seconds (you time this one); Kids: also hold a plank while singing the alphabet song — first as fast as possible, and then as slow as possible. As soon as the kids are through with their alphabet song twice, they jump up to race around and find the next jar. It’s ok if the kids fall out of position and start over, they will giggle themselves silly anyway … mission accomplished, as long as you can hold your plank.
- Adult: 15 burpees with a good squat on each one; Kids: Can either do the same or run in place and then jump to the sky each time you do while they count for you (make it even more fun by having them make a silly face while they run in place). As soon as you are done with the last rep, the kids can race around to find the next jar.
Tag, You’re It!
There’s no better game to keep you fit than a good ol’ fashioned game of tag. Kids love to be chased when you add in a little laughter with this fitness game. Set boundaries for when you can go, and then one person is declared “it”. Once the other person is tagged, they have to spend 15 seconds acting like a monkey/dog/pig/chicken while the new person who will be chased is allowed to count the 15 seconds and get away.
Follow the Leader
Make this fun game more interesting by adding in hula hoops, bands, jump ropes, a jungle gym at the park or a few weighted objects. You can easily get in some squats, skipping, dance moves, swinging across the monkey bars or running up and down the stairs as your kids follow along! Tell each person they have to use each object at least one time during their turn to keep the game going.
These fun games and activities for you and your kids will keep you all moving throughout the summer without getting bored. The kids might even come up with their own ideas to modify the suggested summer activities. When all else fails, take your kids out for a bike ride while you jog along, push them in a stroller while you do your best to run or take time out for a family hike. You’ll be so glad you did this summer!
