5th Gear Kids is an innovative, curriculum-based wellness program launched in 2012 with the goal of educating 5th grade students about energy balance—the relation between food intake and physical activity. Led by Dr. Jim Hill at the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center on the University of Colorado Medical Campus in Aurora, the program was piloted to approximately 7000 kids in Aurora Public Schools and the Cherry Creek School District. Through combined engagement at school, at home, and in the community, 5th Gear Kids’ main objective is to prevent excessive weight gain in 5th graders and give them the skills they need to maintain a healthy weight throughout their lives and become agents of change in their families and community.
