My son is 6. slightly short and skinny. He is also a picky eater. Pls i need to know healthy high calorie, high protein diet he can be taking to atleast make him gain a little more weight. Thanks, Rasheedah
You’re on the right track to helping your son! A high calorie, high protein diet is the way to go! When preparing your son’s dinner play (or if he does it himself) encourage him to a few extra spoonfuls of the protein or carbohydrate offered. Or consider adding more fats to the foods – this could look like, cream vs. milk, butter vs. margarine, full fat sour cream vs light, etc. Even just making simple changes, like going to full fat dairy items, can really add up over time. Dairy is especially important during this time so his bone growth will keep up with his body growing! But what’s most important is to ask your son how he feels about himself.
Does he feel fully energized? If not, he may need more carbohydrates or water.
Does he feel hungry between meals? He may need more snack throughout the day.
Does he feel full after a meal? There should be a noticeable fullness after we finish a meal, so we can make our energy last 3-4 hours.
Does he like the food that’s offered? If not, try bringing him into the kitchen to help cook – this opens up many doors to foods not tried before! Or ask him to help plan the meal, when kids are involved in meal planning they’re more willing to eat what’s on their plate.
I hope this helps!
