Boulder, CO March 10, 2013 – ZisBoomBah.com, where it’s ok to play with your food, has been given a top rating for learning for kids healthy and fitness and for special needs kids by Common Sense Media (CSM), the national nonprofit dedicated to helping parents and teachers manage the media and technology in kids’ lives. The high rating is part of Common Sense Media’s new learning ratings initiative and means ZisBoomBah.com is both a fun and engaging website with the potential to help equip kids and teens with the core skills they need to thrive in tomorrow’s world. The 5-star rating and full review for kids health and fitness http://www.commonsensemedia.org/guide/back-to-school/age-7-12/health-fitness and for special needs children who need help with balancing their foods http://www.commonsensemedia.org/guide/special-needs/organization.
Common Sense Media shares ZisBoomBah.com’s believe that staying healthy and fit is the foundation for a happy, long life for any child. That’s why the CSM leadership team chose ZisBoomBah as the only website in the Healthy Lifestyle and Fitness category to “help kids get started early as they get inspired to move their body in new ways and celebrate a rainbow of vegetables.” The other two picks are both XBox 360 Kinect games. ZisBoomBah.com is a start-up that CSM has rated higher than Disney, PBS, Kids Health, Playnormous and Nourish Interactive.
ZisBoomBah is also chosen for kids who are challenged by organization and routines. Common Sense Media picked ZisBoomBah as a website to help kids to understand and predict what will happen next, get ready for it and remember the steps. “Creating healthy, balanced eating habits can be hard for kids who have trouble with change. Now they can get feedback on eating the right mix of foods to make balanced meals.” The other picks included Leapfrog.
“At ZisBoomBah.com, we strive to create games that kids will love, and parents can feel good about,” said Karen Laszlo, founder. “We’re honored to receive this high rating from Common Sense Media, and we will continue to work to produce the highest quality website for kids, parents, teachers and groups that we can. We are currently working with the Girl Scouts of Colorado and the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta to help their girls learn about healthy living both online and offline! The girls can also earn badges and fun patches by using the quests designed specifically for them.”
“Our learning ratings are the most comprehensive tool parents have to surface the digital media products that are truly educational from those that simply claim to be,” said Seeta Pai, architect of the Common Sense Media learning ratings initiative. “We congratulate ZisBoomBah.com for receiving a high learning rating, and for creating a terrific website that helps kids learn about healthy living and have fun, too.”

Common Sense Media
The review and advice site Common Sense Media (CSM), a respected leader on kids and media issues, has picked ZisBoomBah.com as the top Healthy Lifestyle and Fitness website for kids ages 7–12 in their Back to School Guide 2012. Common Sense Media launched the learning ratings initiative earlier this year to surface for parents the best games, websites and apps for learning. Their goal is to help parents sort out which digital media products are truly educational from those that simply claim to be. Learn more about CSM’s learning ratings initiative and how they rate and review media products.
The non-partisan, not-for-profit organization is “dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology.” Common Sense Media shares ZisBoomBah’s believe that staying healthy and fit is the foundation for a happy, long life. That’s why the CSM leadership team chose ZisBoomBah as the only website in the Healthy Lifestyle and Fitness category to “help kids get started early as they get inspired to move their body in new ways and celebrate a rainbow of vegetables.” The other two picks both are XBox 360 Kinect games.
“Healthy meal planning made fun and practical for kids.”
~Common Sense Media about ZisBoomBah
“Kids can learn about nutritional values as they find the right mix of foods to make balanced meals. Tips and printouts encourage healthy habits,” CSM sums up ZisBoomBah. Their “Bright Idea” for parents is to “Encourage kids to use ZisBoomBah to figure out whether what they’re eating is balanced. Have them enter in real food choices they make — both from healthy and less healthy meals. Help them understand the feedback they get. It’s great food for thought!”
Under “What Parents Need to Know,” CSM writes about ZisBoomBah that “this colorful, kid-friendly nutrition education site helps kids create healthy, balanced meals. In the site’s main game, called “Pick Chow!” kids drag foods to a plate to create a meal, which is then rated on nutrition values like protein, fat, sugar, salt, and more. Once the meal is complete, kids can send it to their parent’s account, and the parent will receive a companion shopping list, recipes and coupons to help create that child’s meal.”
CSM really gets what ZisBoomBah is all about: “Kids can learn about nutritional values as they find the right mix of foods to make balanced meals… Celebrate balanced nutrition and creative cuisine combos in the service of practical cooking.”
“Is It any Good?”
Then CSM asks the big, looming critical question any site being reviewed may dread: IS IT ANY GOOD? We — and you, our loyal readers — know the answer to that question, naturally. Still, we were elated to read CSM’s verdict: “There’s a reason why First Lady Michelle Obama gave a thumbs up to ZisBoomBah. It’s fun, engaging, and teaches kids to make their own healthy meals from a wide variety of foods.” Our heartfelt THANK YOU to the CSM team for these very kind words. We are truly humbled.
What’s more, CSM encourages families to “talk about how the media and advertising can affect their food choices. Read Common Sense Media’s Junk Food Ad Tips, and discuss how healthy living sites like ZisBoomBah are a better source for discovering good food choices than commercial ads.” Wonderful advice!

Earlier this year, ZisBoomBah partnered with the Girl Scouts of Colorado. The troops are integrating ZisBoomBah as part of the Girl Scouts of Colorado’s Live Healthy, Lead Healthy Challenge. We design custom quest — or troop leaders can create their own — for girl scouts to complete and earn their Journeys. What’s more, like all kids playing with their food at ZisBoomBah.com, girl scouts learn about healthy eating choices having fun with Pick Chow! and discover new healthy foods and activities playing Flip It! The girl scouts communicate with each other and their troop leaders through our safe, closed messaging system, like your child communicated with you and her approved friends on ZisBoomBah.com. Girls who participate in ZisBoomBah as part of the Live Healthy, Lead Healthy Challenge get a colorful Healthy Living ZisBoomBah fun patch!
Now that the Girl Scouts of Colorado have been using ZisBoomBah for a while, the reports are coming back from the troops. Today, we want to share some of the great feedback we are getting from the Girl Scouts with our blog readers.

In case you have not heard about ZisBoomBah, the amazing program Girl Scout troops are raving about. ZisBoomBah is an online gaming program for Daisy-Junior Girl Scouts that is centered on Healthy Living. This FREE program for Girl Scouts of Colorado members takes girls through healthy living quests that are fun, interactive, and educational. Troops love this program and here is what they had to say about what they thought about the site. Hollie Hambly a Colorado Springs Girl Scout Junior troop leader loves ZisBoomBah and so do her girls. “Girls are creating obstacle courses, trying new food and recipes at home with their families; they look forward to going on the site and completing the quests.” Hollie’s troop does 30 min of healthy living each troop meeting, “the girls really look forward to that part of the meeting,” said Hollie. A local Denver Girl Scout Brownie troop is planning on using ZisBoomBah to help them complete their Brownie Quest by working with their families around healthy living. “Our troop is earning our Family Star and is planning on using ZisBoomBah to help earn this award,” said Kristin Hamm a Girl Scout Brownie troop leader in the Denver area.
“ZisBoomBah is a creative and fun way for girls to learn about Healthy Living and it is less work for the leader because the activities are already created,” said one leader when asked about the site. Troops also have the freedom to create their own quests that apply to exactly what their troop and girls are working on. “My girls inspired me to write quests for our troop, I wanted ones that the girls could help create,” said Hollie who has created quite a few quests for her troop to complete. When a girl completes a quest she earns points, which she can use to buy accessories for her Antvatar.
What are girls saying…
“I love my Antvatar, I created it, and I get to use my points to dress her up,” said one Girl Scout Junior in Hollie’s troop. My girls love the message boards; they get to talk to each other in a safe and fun environment, stated Hollie. “I really like the Pick Chow program; right now I am trying to get all my stars so I can win my dessert,” stated Hollie’s daughter. Pick Chow is an online quest where girls learn about portions and what we should be eating at each meal. The Girl Scout Juniors and their families love the recipes that they find on the site, and the recipes give families a fun way to try new foods and the girls earn points for their quests in the process.
